Student Business Seedling(SBS) Program

“The Student Business Seedling (SBS) Program at the Desi High School, Thimphu, concluded today with awards given to five students. The top three were awarded two years scholarship from His Majesty the King. Consolation prizes in the form of one years scholarship from the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan were also given to two students.
Following His Majestys visit to Desi High School on 1st March 2018, the RMA was commanded to organize a competition for business ideas with the objective of encouraging creativity and innovation and introducing students to the idea of entrepreneurship and self-employment as viable alternative to limited public sector employment.

As a result, the Student Business Seedling (SBS) Program was initiated by the RMA as a structured model to allow replication in other schools and incorporation into the mainstream education curriculum, if successful.

154 students participated in the program, out of which, 23 were selected to undergo a four month program involving design thinking workshop, field visits to local entreprenuers and businesses, interactions with mentors and bootcamp on basic entrepreneurship and business proposal. The 23 students spent their summer vacation in July to prepare their business proposals and basic prototypes.

The final pitching session was held on 11 August 2018 each student given 5 minutes to pitch their idea followed by a 3 minute Q&A from the judges. Students were confident and humorous with most of them eloquently presenting their pitches in Dzongkha. Students acknowleged the platform provided by SBS to develop their business ideas and in creating a better awareness on thinking about and developing business ideas.

The Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan is privileged to have received Royal Command to initiate the SBS program. The RMA would like to acknowledge the management, faculty and students of Desi High School, the mentors for the program, the judges for the final pitching and our key partners in developing the SBS Program, Mr. Ram Bahadur from Ministry of Labour and Human Resources and Mr. Jigme Tenzin, co-founder of” RMA
